Mariel A. Gerlt is an associate attorney in The Cochran Firm Los Angeles office and practices primarily in the areas of Civil Litigation, Civil Rights Litigation, Governmental Tort Liability and Complex Litigation.

Ms. Gerlt has represented clients in a variety of wrongful death, catastrophic injury and civil rights (police misconduct) cases resulting in significant settlements and trial verdicts, including the 2008 Winston Hayes v. County of Los Angeles case, arising out of the highly publicized videotaped shooting of Winston Hayes by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies which resulted in a $1.36 million dollar jury verdict; as well as a $6.87 million dollar jury verdict against the City of Los Angeles.

Ms. Gerlt earned her Juris Doctor from Southwestern University School of Law, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude. While at Southwestern, Ms. Gerlt was a Notes and Comments Editor for the Southwestern University Law Review. She was a member of the Moot Court Honors Program and Vice President of the Women Law Student's Association. Ms. Gerlt was a Paul Wildman Scholar and a recipient of the Dean's Merit Award. She also earned four CALI "Excellence for the Future" Awards for achieving the highest grade in her classes.

Ms. Gerlt attended the University of Missouri - Columbia as a Curator's Scholar, where she earned an Honor's Certificate and Bachelors Degrees in both Political Science and Spanish. She was also a member of Sigma Delta Pi - National Spanish Honor Society.

Ms. Gerlt is admitted to practice in all California courts and the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Ms. Gerlt is a member of the American Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Bar Association, and Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles.

In 2006, Ms. Gerlt served as a judicial extern for the Honorable George P. Schiavelli (Ret.) in the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
