Al F. Amer is an experienced criminal trial attorney who has dedicated his legal career to the practice of criminal law.
Experience
Prior to joining The Cochran Firm, Mr. Amer was a Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles County for over seven years and an Assistant District Attorney in Dallas County for almost one year. As a prosecutor, Mr. Amer handled thousands of cases ranging in severity from DUI, drug and property crimes to false imprisonment, sexual assault and murder. He has independently tried dozens of jury trials, with more than 75% of them being felony offenses. Many of the cases Mr. Amer tried were either "third strike" offenses or cases where the defendant faced life in prison. Mr. Amer also has an outstanding trial record and understands what it takes to succeed at trial.
As a Deputy District Attorney and an Assistant District Attorney, Mr. Amer worked in a variety of assignments. These assignments encompassed many different courthouses and two different states included misdemeanor trials, felony trials, juvenile adjudications, preliminary hearings, domestic violence court and Proposition 36 drug court. While in the felony trial division in downtown Los Angeles, Torrance and Norwalk, Mr. Amer handled numerous "specially assigned" cases involving armed robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault, physical and sexual child abuse, domestic violence and elder abuse.
In addition to his extensive trial experience, Mr. Amer has extensive experience in the filing of misdemeanor and felony criminal charges, negotiating plea agreements in both misdemeanor and felony cases, and has personally conducted hundreds of preliminary hearings and juvenile adjudications. All of this experience on "the other side" gives Mr. Amer an excellent perspective and gives his clients a great advantage with their cases.
Prior to his employment as a District Attorney, Mr. Amer was a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Aurelio Munoz, the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office Civil Liabilities section and the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office in the Environmental Crimes division.
Professional Activities
Mr. Amer is a licensed attorney in the states of California and Texas. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, Los Angeles County Bar Association, Orange County Bar Association, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Dallas County Bar Association, and Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
Education
Mr. Amer received his Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles in 1998. While attending Loyola he served as a staff writer for the International and Comparative Law Journal. Mr. Amer received his Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Northridge in 1992. While an undergrad, he was on the Dean’s List for 1991-1992.
