In the largest verdict in the history of Clayton County, Georgia, a Clayton County State Court jury awarded the family of Greg A. Gandy a $20.1 Million verdict in a motor vehicle accident wrongful death case against an electrical supply company and their employee driver.
This verdict is the largest verdict in a wrongful death case with a female and an African American as lead attorneys.
Greg A. Gandy, a 62 year old school teacher, suffered broken ribs when his car was rear-ended by an electrical supply truck. Gandy was stopped at a red light when the truck crashed into his vehicle. While hospitalized, he developed an ilieus and subsequent complications. Gandy ultimately aspirated and died.
The truck driver was driving a truck during the day and working nights at Wal-Mart. With the driver having only 3-4 hours of sleep a night, the defendant company violated transportation regulations by failing to ask their employee about other jobs he might be working. After 3 weeks of minimal rest from working two jobs, the driver caused an accident which killed someone.
Approximately one week before trial, the defense announced their intent to apportion responsibility to a non-party. Defense attorneys tried to blame the treating physicians for failing to save the patient they had put in the hospital. They named their medical expert the week before trial.
Highly regarded by his students, Greg Gandy was well known for his volunteer work for the homeless and other charitable causes.
Plaintiff's attorneys from The Cochran Firm were Jane Sams, Shean Williams, and Kenneth Lester.
