According to a 2006 article by the New York Times, a Dartmouth Medical School researcher found that Medicare data showed that patients in Elyria, Ohio, which is served by the NOHC and EMH, allegedly received angioplasty at a rate of 42 per 1,000 when the national average at the time was only 11.3 per 1,000. {NYT August 2006 article: https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/08\/18\/business\/18stent.html?pagewanted=all&amp;_r=0}<\/p>\n<p>Also in 2006, a former manager of the catheterization laboratory at EMH filed a <a title=\"https:\/\/cochranohio.wpengine.com\" href=\"https:\/\/cochranohio.wpengine.com\">whistleblower lawsuit<\/a> under the False Claims Act (FCA) that alleged that physicians pressed staff to falsify complaints made by cardiac patients, and raised questions about patients receiving multiple procedures leading to the \u2018overtreated\u2019 Medicare patients allegations.<\/p>\n<p>After reaching the agreement, the <a title=\"https:\/\/partnersforyourhealth.web5.hubspot.com\/Blog\/bid\/93734\/North-Ohio-Heart-Reaches-Settlement-Continues-to-Provide-High-Quality-Cardiac-Care\" href=\"https:\/\/partnersforyourhealth.web5.hubspot.com\/Blog\/bid\/93734\/North-Ohio-Heart-Reaches-Settlement-Continues-to-Provide-High-Quality-Cardiac-Care\">NOHC posted a statement<\/a> to its website that said the group \u201cpassed every Medicare audit ever done\u201d, and \u201cwe felt confident we were making the correct choices for our patients. We still do.\u201d The NY Times reports that EMH released a statement saying that \u201cthere is no question that the patients treated had heart disease and some degree of blockage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No specific physicians were singled out by federal regulators during the investigations, nor were any disciplined due to the accusations, according to the NYTimes. <a title=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/05\/business\/us-settles-accusations-that-doctors-overtreated.html?_r=0&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;adxnnlx=1357602633-qXS45V+Bwo2t7kKNDZ+bzA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/01\/05\/business\/us-settles-accusations-that-doctors-overtreated.html?_r=0&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;adxnnlx=1357602633-qXS45V+Bwo2t7kKNDZ+bzA\">NOHC <\/a>said in their statement that though a settlement was reached, it was without \u201c<a title=\"https:\/\/cochranohio.wpengine.com\/medical-malpractice\" href=\"https:\/\/cochranohio.wpengine.com\/medical-malpractice\">an admission of wrongdoing<\/a>\u201d.
