The car that killed Tamia Chappman was being pursued by the Cleveland police in a chase. Attorneys say this police chase broke state law, and never should have occurred. They believe that the Cleveland police are to be held accountable for Chappman\u2019s death resulting from their reckless pursuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attornies at The Cochran Firm Cleveland are representing Tamia Chappman\u2019s family. They uphold that Cleveland police failed to comply with police policies and broke the law in the deadly pursuit that killed Tamia last month in East Cleveland. Sherrie Chappman, her mother, and Eileen Cunningham, her cousin, spoke out at a news conference about how the police department has failed to protect their family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video autoplay controls src=\"https:\/\/assets.scrippsdigital.com\/cms\/videoIframe.html?&amp;vpost=https:\/\/x-default-stgec.uplynk.com\/ausw\/slices\/ed5\/b2c1c5c2af374f52af57ddcae54c6663\/ed5c2c6881814c1dbd2c9922fc6f0aa2\/poster_c3ec012677d944228d5609d96cf34a28.jpeg&amp;host=www.news5cleveland.com&amp;title=Family%20of%2013-year-old%20girl%20killed%20in%20crash%20during%20police%20pursuit%20speaks%20out&amp;kw=speeding%2CThe%20Cochran%20Firm%2Ckilled%2Cdeadly%2CShean%20Williams%2Clibrary%2Ccarjacking%2C13-year-old%2Ceast%20cleveland%2Cpolice%20pursuit%2C%20cleveland%2Cfamily%2C%2013-year-old%20killed%20in%20pursuit&amp;m3u8=https:\/\/content.uplynk.com\/ed5c2c6881814c1dbd2c9922fc6f0aa2.m3u8&amp;mp4=https:\/\/x-default-stgec.uplynk.com\/ausw\/slices\/ed5\/b2c1c5c2af374f52af57ddcae54c6663\/ed5c2c6881814c1dbd2c9922fc6f0aa2\/ed5c2c6881814c1dbd2c9922fc6f0aa2_g.mp4&amp;purl=\/news\/local-news\/watch-live-family-of-13-year-old-girl-killed-in-crash-during-police-pursuit-speaks-out&amp;dtrack=1&amp;story=1&amp;contplay=*recent&amp;tags=Homepage%20Showcase%2CCleveland%20Metro%2COH%20Cuyahoga%2CLocal%20News&amp;cust_params=temp%3D%26weather%3D&amp;s=wews\" playsinline><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The pursuit began on the afternoon of Dec. 20 near West 117<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;Street after a woman exiting Target was approached by a male with a gun who demanded her vehicle, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An off-duty police officer witnessed the incident and began pursuit of the vehicle, authorities said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The male in the stolen car entered Interstate 90 heading east and traveled into East Cleveland, according to police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second officer joined in the pursuit of the vehicle as well, police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pursuit ended in a crash that occurred in the area of Euclid Avenue and Lakefront Road in East Cleveland, according to police. The driver was a 15-year-old boy who was arrested at the scene of the crash, and days later, another 15-year-old boy was arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dispatch recordings obtained by 5 On Your Side Investigators revealed officers reported speeds topping 70 miles an hour as they raced through city streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An officer reported his speed was 58 miles an hour in \u201cmedium traffic\u201d along Euclid Avenue just moments before investigators say the stolen SUV hit another car, went onto the sidewalk, and hit Tamia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamia, a sixth-grade student at Superior Elementary School, died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family members say three of her siblings and a cousin were with her when she was hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult time for them because they witnessed what happened to their sister,\u201d said Tamia\u2019s cousin Eileen Cunningham. \u201cShe was a vibrant, loving, smart young lady, and the family is simply devastated behind the circumstances leading up to her death.\u201dShean Williams, an attorney with The Cochran Firm, believes Cleveland police were in the wrong for initiating the pursuit and that they did not take required precautions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTamia died because the city of Cleveland police department put more value on recovering a stolen car than they put the value on Tamia\u2019s life,\u201d Williams said. \u201cWe have technology in this country, in this world to find anybody, so why do we need to have a 75 mile an hour chase in the streets of this community when children are getting out of school? That doesn\u2019t make any sense.\u201d Her family is distraught over her death and miss her tremendously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Williams said his firm is conducting its own investigation into the incident.
