{"id":1513,"date":"2021-07-23T15:54:39","date_gmt":"2021-07-23T15:54:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/?post_type=sub-practice-areas&#038;p=1513"},"modified":"2021-07-23T15:54:39","modified_gmt":"2021-07-23T15:54:39","slug":"cancer-case-studies","status":"publish","type":"sub-practice-areas","link":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/cancer-case-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Cancer Case Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Routine Colon Cancer Screening Required For All Patients Over 50<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>72 year old woman, who was a former nurse, developed very non specific symptoms of cancer.&nbsp; By the time she was diagnosed with colon cancer, she only lived a few months.&nbsp; She had been under the care of her primary care doctor for years.&nbsp; Her doctor regularly examined her, monitored her blood pressure and ordered tests for various symptoms.&nbsp; However, he did not ever offer her routine Colon Cancer Screening.&nbsp; She never exhibited any symptoms of bleeding from the rectum or other signs that would mandate cancer screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the experts in the case agreed that the standard of care required a primary care physician to order routine colon cancer screening to all patients over the age of 50 regardless of their family history or lack of symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The defense attempted to argue that she was a nurse and should have asked for it.&nbsp; Also, they argued that she was scared of tests and would not have undergone them if he had ordered them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outcome:&nbsp; The defendant doctor settled the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Failure to Diagnose Breast Cancer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>43 year old female has what appears to be an abnormality on her routine mammogram test.&nbsp; The radiologist recommends further clinical correlation and follow up.&nbsp; Treating OB\/GYN notes in the records that patient has a lump.&nbsp; However she does not order any follow up or a needle biopsy to&nbsp; investigate lump.&nbsp; 12 months later (at the next routine mammogram) the lump is larger and the patient is diagnosed with breast cancer.&nbsp; Patient undergoes mastectomy and tests positive for spread of the cancer to her lymph nodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expert testified that standard of care required OB\/GYN to follow up.&nbsp; Also, mammograms are required every 6 months when a suspicious mass is palpated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Outcome:&nbsp; OB\/GYN settled case.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":""},"categories":[56],"class_list":["post-1513","sub-practice-areas","type-sub-practice-areas","status-publish","hentry","category-cancer"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas\/1513","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/sub-practice-areas"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1513"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1513"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
