Traumatic Brain Injury (\u2018TBI\u201d)<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 a physical injury to the brain tissue caused by a trauma or\u00a0blow to the head which may produce temporary or permanent cognitive deficits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Atrophy<\/span><\/strong> loss of brain tissue and mass.\u00a0 Occurs naturally with age.\u00a0 However, it can be greatly accelerated\u00a0 in traumatic brain injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cognitive Deficit<\/span><\/strong> - an impairment to the thought process.\u00a0 Loss of higher reasoning, forgetfulness, learning disabilities, concentration difficulties and\u00a0decreased intelligence are all forms of cognitive deficits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concussion<\/span><\/strong> - a type of traumatic brain injury taken from the Latin concutere, <\/em>which\u00a0means \u201cto shake\u00a0 Violently.\u201d It is caused by a sudden or direct blow to the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coup-Contra Coup<\/span><\/strong> - a type of traumatic brain injury which causes contusions in the brain at\u00a0the site of impact (\u201cthe Coup\u201d) and on the opposite side of impact (\u201cthe Contra- Coup).\u00a0 It occurs when head trauma forces the brain to slam\u00a0against the other side of the skull from a violent impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CAT (CT) Scan<\/span><\/strong> - CAT stands for computerized axial\u00a0 tomography and is a type of imaging study that combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles to create cross-sectional images or slices of the bones, blood vessels and soft tissues of the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diffuse Axonal Injury<\/span><\/strong> - a type of traumatic brain injury where the white matter of the brain is\u00a0injured by sudden acceleration-deceleration and\/or rotational forces.\u00a0The resulting tissue injury is characterized by axonal stretching,\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 disruption and eventual separation of nerve fibers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diffuse Brain Injury<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0- A diffuse brain injury is a type of injury that occurs over a more\u00a0widespread area of the brain.\u00a0 A diffuse axonal injury is a type of diffuse brain injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
