{"id":2013,"date":"2021-08-02T20:11:37","date_gmt":"2021-08-02T20:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/?post_type=sub-practice-areas&#038;p=2013"},"modified":"2021-12-10T18:27:19","modified_gmt":"2021-12-10T18:27:19","slug":"encephalopathy","status":"publish","type":"sub-practice-areas","link":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/encephalopathy\/","title":{"rendered":"Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a unique neurodegenerative disease found in individuals with a history of repetitive head impacts such as those sustained through contact sports or military combat.&nbsp; Prospective, longitudinal studies with post-mortem neuropathologic validation as well as in vivo diagnostic techniques are needed in order to advance the understanding of CTE clinically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical symptoms of CTE generally present years or decades after exposure to trauma.&nbsp; Although there are some symptom overlaps between the acute concussive injury and the later-life neurodegenerative process of CTE (attention and concentration loss, headache), it is thought that CTE is distinct from the acute concussion sequelae.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evidence to date suggests that CTE presents clinically with symptoms in one or more of four possible domains: mood, behavior, cognition and motor.&nbsp; Commonly noted mood features include: depression, irritability and hopelessness.&nbsp; Behavioral features may include impulsivity, explosivity, and aggression.&nbsp; Cognitive features can include memory impairment, executive dysfunction and in severe cases dementia.&nbsp; Motor features including parkinsonism, ataxia and dysarthria appear in a subset of cases, predominantly boxers.&nbsp; In addition, chronic headache is also experienced in some cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To date, (2014) there are no objective, validated in vivo biomarkers of CTE.&nbsp; However, DTI has shown evidence of persistent changes in white matter integrity after periods of head impact exposure which may prove useful in distinguishing CTE.&nbsp; Magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), a method of measuring brain metabolites has shown promise in preliminary studies.&nbsp; Cerebrospinal fluid markers and CSF p-tau markers have been shown to correlate with levels of p-tau NFT deposition in the brain, thus, making CSF protein measures a potential useful biomarker for CTE.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":2015,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":"","_seopress_analysis_target_kw":""},"categories":[75],"class_list":["post-2013","sub-practice-areas","type-sub-practice-areas","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-traumatic-brain-injury"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas\/2013","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/sub-practice-areas"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2015"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2013"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2013"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
