unless such person has taken and passed knowledge and driving skills tests for a Commercial Driver\u2019s License (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To obtain a CDL, all drivers must have knowledge of the following 20 general areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. &nbsp; &nbsp; Commercial vehicle safety control systems<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Basic control<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Shifting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Backing<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">7. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Visual search<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">8. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Communication<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">9. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Speed management<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">10. &nbsp; Space management<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">11. &nbsp; Night operation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">12. &nbsp; Extreme driving conditions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">13. &nbsp; Hazard perceptions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">14. &nbsp; Emergency maneuvers<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">15. &nbsp; Skid control and recovery<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">16. &nbsp; Relationship of cargo to vehicle control<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">17. &nbsp; Vehicle inspections<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">18. &nbsp; Hazardous materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">19. &nbsp; Mountain driving<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">20. &nbsp; Fatigue and awareness<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A State must provide a FMCSA pre-approved driver information manual to a CDL applicant.&nbsp; States must use the FMCSA pre-approved pool of test questions.&nbsp; Each knowledge test must be valid and reliable so as to ensure that driver applicants possess the knowledge under the regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve a passing score on each of the knowledge tests, a driver applicant must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions. &nbsp;
