Under the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, no person is allowed to operate a commercial motor vehicle unless such person has taken and passed knowledge and driving skills tests for a Commercial Driver\u2019s License (CDL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To obtain a CDL, all drivers must have knowledge of the following 20 general areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1. Safe operations regulations<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Safe vehicle control systems<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3. Commercial vehicle safety control systems<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4. Basic control<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. Shifting<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6. Backing<\/p>\n\n\n\n
7. Visual search<\/p>\n\n\n\n
8. Communication<\/p>\n\n\n\n
9. Speed management<\/p>\n\n\n\n
10. Space management<\/p>\n\n\n\n
11. Night operation<\/p>\n\n\n\n
12. Extreme driving conditions<\/p>\n\n\n\n
13. Hazard perceptions<\/p>\n\n\n\n
14. Emergency maneuvers<\/p>\n\n\n\n
15. Skid control and recovery<\/p>\n\n\n\n
16. Relationship of cargo to vehicle control<\/p>\n\n\n\n
17. Vehicle inspections<\/p>\n\n\n\n
18. Hazardous materials<\/p>\n\n\n\n
19. Mountain driving<\/p>\n\n\n\n
20. Fatigue and awareness<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A State must provide a FMCSA pre-approved driver information manual to a CDL applicant. States must use the FMCSA pre-approved pool of test questions. Each knowledge test must be valid and reliable so as to ensure that driver applicants possess the knowledge under the regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To achieve a passing score on each of the knowledge tests, a driver applicant must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions.
