{"id":2449,"date":"2021-08-31T14:31:43","date_gmt":"2021-08-31T14:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/?post_type=sub-practice-areas&#038;p=2449"},"modified":"2022-09-14T15:29:53","modified_gmt":"2022-09-14T15:29:53","slug":"avoid-collisions","status":"publish","type":"sub-practice-areas","link":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/avoid-collisions\/","title":{"rendered":"Tips for Passenger Vehicles to Avoid Truck Collisions"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has developed \u201cTips\u201d for passenger vehicle drivers relating to their interactions with large trucks.&nbsp; The FMCA notes that large trucks do not have the maneuverability that passenger vehicles have on the road and have long stopping distances.&nbsp; This makes if more difficult for the large truck to react if a passenger vehicle makes an unsafe maneuver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Stay out of Blind Spots<\/strong> \u2013 Large trucks and buses have huge blind spots on all four sides.&nbsp; The FMCSA cautions that if you cannot see the driver in the vehicle side mirror, then the driver also cannot see you.&nbsp; Do not drive in his blind spot.&nbsp; Slow down or move ahead to stay visible and take extra care when merging.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Pass Safely<\/strong> \u2013 Signal clearly then move into the left lane and accelerate so that you can get past the truck or bus safely and pass promptly.&nbsp; Do not linger in the truck\u2019s blind spot.&nbsp; Make sure you can visualize the truck in your rearview mirror before you pull in front of the truck.&nbsp; Give it extra space.&nbsp; Do not pass trucks on downgrades where they tend to pick up speed.&nbsp; And never pass from the right lane.&nbsp; When a truck is passing, stay to the right and slow down.&nbsp; Give them extra space to change lanes or merge in from ramps.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Do Not Cut it Close<\/strong> \u2013 Remember, trucks do not have the same brakes and stopping ability that passenger vehicles have.&nbsp; It is especially dangerous to \u201ccut off\u201d a commercial truck.&nbsp; If you move in too quickly you will likely be in a blind spot of the truck.&nbsp; Even if you are visible, the truck may not be able to slow down quickly enough to avoid a crash.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li><strong>Stay Back<\/strong> \u2013 Tailgating a truck puts you in a blind spot.&nbsp; Because trucks sit high off the ground, your vehicle may also slide under a truck in a crash.&nbsp; Stay back when stopped, particularly on an upgrade, where the truck might roll back.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li><strong>Anticipate Wide Turns<\/strong> \u2013 Trucks need extra turning room.&nbsp; They swing wide or may start a turn from the middle lane.&nbsp; Never try to squeeze by or get between a turning truck and the curb.&nbsp; Never \u201cblock the box\u201d at an intersection or stop in front of the line so the truck can turn safely.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\"><li><strong>Be Patient<\/strong> \u2013 Trucks need time to accelerate and sometimes used technology like speed limiters.&nbsp; Honking, driving aggressively, or weaving through traffic can cause dangerous distractions and crashes.<\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":2451,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":"","_seopress_analysis_target_kw":""},"categories":[104],"class_list":["post-2449","sub-practice-areas","type-sub-practice-areas","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-causes-of-accidents-with-large-trucks"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas\/2449","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/sub-practice-areas"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/sub-practice-areas"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/2451"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2449"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/new-orleans\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2449"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
