In a statement, Amtrak stated it is planning\u00a0to retrofit its entire fleet of 300 locomotives with inward-facing cameras.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Amtrak trains are fitted with outward facing cameras and monitoring systems which track the actions of the train and engineer. \u00a0Amtrak's\u00a0inward-facing cameras are supposed to\u00a0improve safety and provide greater investigative insight after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/washington-dc\/practice-areas\/personal-injury\/train-accident-injury-lawyer\/\">train accidents<\/a>. \u00a0Members of Congress have come out in support of Amtrak\u2019s announcement but some, like Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), are urging inward-facing cameras be made a mandatory safety protocol by the Federal Railroad Administration.<\/p>\n<h4><em><b>Investigation into train 188 derailment ongoing<\/b><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>Federal authorities are continuing their investigation into why and how Amtrak train was traveling more than\u00a0100 miles per hour when it derailed\u00a0near Frankford Junction, Philadelphia. \u00a0Eight passengers were killed and more than\u00a0200 were injured. \u00a0The train\u2019s engineer at the time, Brandon Bostian, claims to have suffered a head injury and has no recollection of the accident. \u00a0There were no inward-facing cameras inside train 188 and what transpired in the moments leading up to the crash remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended that railroad\u00a0operators outfit trains\u00a0with audio and video recording devices. \u00a0While the Federal Railroad Administration claims to agree with the NTSB\u2019s recommendation to make video recorders a mandatory safety practice, it has not proposed any regulations itself to solidify the practice. \u00a0Federal\u00a0regulations, such as those recommended by Sen.
