{"id":1164,"date":"2015-10-06T16:50:35","date_gmt":"2015-10-06T16:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/washington-dc\/federal-audit-reveals-widespread-fraud-in-medicare-ambulance-trips\/"},"modified":"2025-07-24T12:21:26","modified_gmt":"2025-07-24T17:21:26","slug":"federal-audit-reveals-widespread-fraud-in-medicare-ambulance-trips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/washington-dc\/federal-audit-reveals-widespread-fraud-in-medicare-ambulance-trips\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal audit reveals widespread fraud in Medicare ambulance trips"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><b>One in five ambulance suppliers submitted questionable bills<\/b><\/em><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_4445\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/washington-dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dc-ambulance-whistleblower-fraud.jpg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4445\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4445\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cochranfirm.com\/washington-dc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/dc-ambulance-whistleblower-fraud.jpg-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Washington DC ambulance fraud whistleblower\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\"><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-4445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A new federal audit found that many ambulance transports paid for by Medicare (and accordingly, by taxpayers) were questionable or improper.<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last month, the Office of Inspector General (OIG) released a detailed study of nearly 7.3 million ambulance transports billed to Medicare Part B in the first half of 2012 identifying <strong>millions of dollars of potentially inappropriate payments<\/strong>. According to the OIG report, approximately $54 million of inappropriate Medicare payments were made to ambulance transports under dubious pretences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At least $24 million in Medicare payments were improper and not justifiable under Medicare billing regulations. Another $30 million in ambulance transport&nbsp;payments were questionable and billed for patients who received no Medicare services at all. The OIG estimates up to one in five ambulance service providers had questionable billing practices such as having an unusually high miles per transport average in urban areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As the federal audit points out,&nbsp;more than half of questionable transports discovered took place in four large metro regions. Hot spots of suspected fraud include <strong>Philadelphia, New York, Houston, and Los Angeles<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The OIG offered four recommendations to stem&nbsp;the widespread ambulance billing fraud:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center for Medicare and Medicaid Studies should determine whether moratoriums on ambulance contractor enrollment are appropriate&nbsp;in additional geographical areas, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether ambulance transport contractors must enroll in the National Provider Identifier for certification, <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To monitor ambulance billing more closely, and <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Examine the legitimacy of claims submitted by ambulance transport contractors identified by the OIG to be suspicious.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The OIG\u2019s report highlights what is already well known by those who study the issue: Medicare is extremely susceptible to fraud by contractors, hospitals, and unscrupulous physicians who take advantage of the system. Every year, billions of taxpayer dollars is siphoned from Medicare by perpetrators of fraud.
