Diabetes drug linked with acidosis and kidney failure

The dangerous drug and mass tort attorneys of The Cochran Firm, D.C. are actively reviewing potential compensation claims for people who suffered kidney failure, myocardial infarction (heart attacks), other cardiovascular issues and ketoacidosis after using the diabetes drug Invokana.

Japanese pharmaceutical company Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma originally developed Invokana (canagliflozin), which is marketed in the United States under license by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a division of Johnson & Johnson. The drug is known as a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. The type 2 diabetes medication has become an important source of revenue for Johnson & Johnson due to an expensive marketing blitz aimed at American consumers.
According to a report by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, Invokana has been linked with serious injuries involving kidney function and hypersensitivity reactions. Adverse events include:

  • Heart attack
  • Kidney failure or impairment
  • Dehydration and fluid imbalances
  • Kidney stones
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Hypotension
  • Swelling of the tongue, lips, face, or throat (angioedema)
  • Abnormal or other weight loss

FDA warns consumers about Invokana side effects

On May 15, 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) publicly warned that Invokana may lead to ketoacidosis, which is a serious medical condition where the body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones. The condition may require hospitalization.

The FDA stated it is continuing to investigate the drug and will determine whether the prescribing information for Invokana should be changed. The FDA urged patients who took Invokana to monitor for signs of ketoacidosis and seek medical care if they experience symptoms, including:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Difficult breathing
  • Sleepiness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Confusion
  • Unusual fatigue

Health care professionals are urged to report Invokana side effects to the FDA’s MedWatch program. Other drugs covered by the FDA warning include Invokamet, Farxiga, Xigduo XR, Jardiance, and Glyxambi.
