Wrongful death: polysomnography sleep study: Severely injured after participating in a sleep study?

Sleep studies are supposed to be comfortable and painless. Unfortunately, patients may suffer serious injuries due to the carelessness of attending clinicians or employees, who fail to adequately monitor vital signs such as heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and brain activity.

Did you or a loved one suffer a catastrophic injury after participating in a sleep study like:

  • polysomnogram (PSG),
  • multiple sleep latency test (MSLT), or
  • maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT)

It may be because the clinic’s staff was unable to fulfill their obligation to take reasonable steps to ensure you or your loved one’s safety. The sleep study wrongful death attorneys of The Cochran Firm, D.C. have a team of in-house registered nurses and investigators who can investigate your claim and help determine if your serious injury was the result of negligence.

Who administers polysomnographic exams?

Each state has requirements for how individuals and practices may be licensed to administer polysomnographic exams. In general, registered professionals require some form of accreditation by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM) in order to practice.

Polysomnographic technologists (sometimes referred to as polysomnographist) are required to receive both on-the-job and certificate training to be certified as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) by the BRPT. Registered Polysomnographic Technologists may also begin their careers as Certified Polysomnographic Technologists, a transitional certification that may be held for three years at which point the individual must seek accreditation as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist.

Registered Sleep Technologists (RST) are polysomnographic technologists certified by the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Becoming an RST requires a five year certification.

Polysomnographic sleep study injury lawsuit

If you or a loved one participated in a sleep study and suffered a serious injury, it may be due to negligence on the part of the technologist or sleep study facility administering the exam. The vital signs of patients participating in sleep studies are monitored and recorded throughout the exam and patients are supposed to be supervised by professionals.

Many states and insurance companies require polysomnographic technologists to be certified and registered with either the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT) or American Board of Sleep Medicine (ABSM). The Cochran Firm, D.C. has the experience and resources necessary to investigate whether your injury was caused by the sleep study facility or polysomnographic technologist’s failure to take reasonable steps to ensure your safety.
