The family of Colby Ross, the Dayton, Ohio man who was killed in May when a suspect who was being pursued at a high rate of speed by deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office crashed into his car as he sat at a traffic light, joined their lawyers July 31 to address media following his senseless death.
Attorneys, Shean Williams of The Cochran Firm Atlanta, Michael Wright of The Cochran Firm Ohio, and Benjamin Crump are demanding the release of the full pursuit video and the investigative report that names the deputies involved and their roles.
On May 21, a police pursuit occurred where authorities were reportedly in a high-speed chase with a suspect.
Montgomery County Sheriff deputies deployed stop sticks in an effort to stop the suspect but it didn't work.
Investigators say that deputies pursued at more than 90 miles per hour when the suspect's vehicle struck Ross.
According to attorney Shean Williams of The Cochran Firm Atlanta, the family's legal team believes the office’s internal investigation related to the crash has already been conducted.
“Every time there’s a high-speed chase, every time there’s a death, there must be an internal investigation. We know that they’ve done it," said Williams. "Their legal department has it. Unfortunately, their legal team doesn’t have it because they won’t give it to us yet.”
Colby Ross was the father of two children, a 13-year-old son and a 15-year-old daughter.
His father Skip Ross is heartbroken.
"Out of the citizens of all the community and everybody else's lives that they could hurt, unfortunately it was my son, and I got to live with that," said Ross. "But we're going to get justice and we're going to do it the right way."
Williams addressed these chases as a nationwide problem, reflecting on a devastating case that they recently settled, when he and Wright represented the family of Tamia Chappman. In 2019, 13-year-old Tamia was struck by a vehicle during a police chase in Cleveland. The wrongful death lawsuit was settled earlier this year for $4.8 million.
