About Erb’s Palsy
Erb’s palsy is a paralytic condition of the arm that occurs when the nerves connecting the shoulder to the spine, called the brachial plexus, are damaged. The most common form of Erb’s palsy occurs during birth, either because the baby is too large to be delivered naturally or as the result of someone pulling the infant from the birth canal.
Diagnosing Erb's Palsy
Erb’s palsy is most commonly caused during birth, but may also be caused later in life from an injury. Injury to the brachial plexus may occur from the following or other causes:
- Gunshot
- Violent action to arm, such as pull or jerk
- Slip-and-Fall on shoulder
- Auto-pedestrian accident
Often resulting in partial or complete paralyzation of the arm, Erb’s palsy may also result in shoulder pain without paralysis. Depending on the extent of damage caused by the injury, if the injury was caused by another individual, you are owed compensation.
Erb’s palsy often occurs as a product of medical malpractice, either because the doctor did not recommend caesarian section birth or by the mishandling of the infant while he or she was being birthed. Determining if the Erb’s palsy was caused by medical malpractice is a task for an experienced medical malpractice attorney.
If you or your loved one is the victim of Erb’s palsy or damage to the brachial plexus, do not wait until you are no longer legally allowed to pursue compensation.
