Preparing For Your Court Date

Arriving as the plaintiff or defendant, you should always prepare before entering a courtroom. Below are suggested tips on how you should present yourself for your day in court.

Attire

First impressions are key. The moment you step foot into the courtroom all eyes will be focused on you, so make sure you look presentable. Shower and arrive clean shaven. You should dress in clean pressed, conservative clothing. Men should wear a suit and tie with dress pants and dress shoes. Women should dress in slacks with a blouse, skirt suit or dress with flats or low heels.

You should avoid wearing the following clothing items:

  • Jeans or shorts
  • Skirts or dresses above the knee
  • Sneakers or flip flops
  • T-shirts, tank tops or sleeveless shirts
  • Accessories such as hats or sunglasses
  • Anything too flashy or bright

Tattoos or body piercings should also be covered at best.

Behavior

Again, you will be watched by all eyes in the courtroom, especially by the judge and jury so make sure to behave.

The following should also be addressed:

  • Be on time
  • Silence your phone
  • Do not eat or chew gum
  • Do not interrupt. Only speak when it is your turn
  • Stand when you address the court
  • Listen to your attorney or legal representative

Presenting Your Case 

Depending on your case, you make speak little to none or the opposite. You may have to present yourself in front of a jury.
