Baltimore/Towson gynecologist Dr. John Yacoub’s medical license suspended amid criminal investigation

On Oct. 8, 2013, the Maryland Board of Physicians ordered Dr. John Yacoub to immediately cease and desist from performing any medical and surgical procedures. Dr. Yacoub previously practiced at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Saint Agnes Hospital. In its reasons for suspending Dr. Yacoub’s medical license, the Board noted that numerous images were found on his phone of female genitalia. The Cochran Firm, D.C. is opening an investigation into patients whose privacy may have been invaded by Dr. Yacoub. Please contact our team of experienced legal professionals if you believe your rights were violated by Dr. Yacoub.

Dr. Yacoub was not employed at GBMC

According to the Board, Dr. Yacoub’s primary practice setting is 6565 North Charles St., Suite 416, Towson, Maryland. Dr. Yacoub worked as an OB/GYN and directed minimally invasive surgery centers at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) and Baltimore-based Saint Agnes Hospital, according to the Baltimore Sun. Dr. Yacoub most recently leased office space at a pavilion at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and had privileges at the hospital but was not an employee there, according to ABC 2 News. According to the report, a Saint Agnes spokeswoman confirmed that effective Nov. 28, 2012, Yacoub was no longer practicing or seeing patients as part of Seton Medical Group, a component of Saint Agnes Healthcare.

According to the Maryland Board of Physicians, Dr. Yacoub was fired on Nov. 28, 2012, from a previous position for several reasons, including failure to properly procure, store, and dispense prescription drugs. One of Dr. Yacoub’s staff members took photos of large bottles containing drugs because she was concerned he may have been selling drugs from his office, according to the Board’s Cease and Desist Order.

Dr. Yacoub tested positive for cocaine use

Dr. Yacoub tested positive for cocaine, according to the Board, and indicated he used the drug within the last 90 days. The Order also states that DEA agents found cocaine residue at Dr. Yacoub’s home and he told DEA agents he had snorted cocaine off the kitchen table the prior evening. The Cease and Desist Order also indicates that Dr. Yacoub inappropriately mailed drugs to a female patient, with whom he had a sexual relationship. Dr. Yacoub stated that “he knew what he was doing was not within the scope of accepted medical practice, but he did not believe it was illegal,” according to the Order.

The Maryland Board of Physicians determined that Dr. Yacoub’s behavior poses a serious risk to the health, safety, and welfare of patients. Dr. Yacoub’s suspension hearing with the Board is scheduled for Oct. 23, 2013.

For the second time this year, a Baltimore gynecologist faces discipline for allegedly possessing images of female genitalia. In February, Baltimore police and Johns Hopkins Medicine officials investigated Dr. Nikita Levy over accusations he secretly recorded his female patients in the examination room. Dr. Levy was later found dead in an apparent suicide. The Cochran Firm, D.C. represents hundreds of Dr. Levy’s victims in legal claims arising from severe emotional distress due to this terrible invasion of patient privacy.
