One person died and over 100 were hurt after a commuter train jumped a bumper block and went through a passenger terminal at a Hoboken, New Jersey train station this morning. Victims aboard the train report the train never slowed down as it approached the striation, sending the train airborne into the depot.
An estimated 15,000 people travel through the Hoboken commuter station every day, mostly on their way to southern Manhattan. The crash suspended train service in and out of the station and those without vehicles were forced to take the bus to get into New York City or return home for the day.
Government investigators from the Federal Railroad Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board immediately responded to the crash, trying to determine what exactly happened. Reports suggest emergency responders found the train’s engineer unresponsive and had to evacuate him.
11 others were transported to local emergency rooms but none of the injuries are expected to be life-threatening. Approximately 40 others were hospitalized but their injuries were minor, according to media outlets.
Train accident investigations are often complex ordeals involving several regulatory and investigative bodies, including state and federal jurisdictions. Train accident victims should strongly consider hiring an experienced metro train accident lawyer to help get the answers and justice they need to be made whole again.
