Sen. Harry Reid and Wife File Lawsuit Against Exercise Band Maker

Democratic Minority Leader files product liability lawsuit after suffering broken bones, blindness

Senate Democratic Minority Leader Harry Reid and his wife, Landra Gould, recently filed a $50,000 lawsuit in Nevada against three companies, Hygenic Intangible Property Holding Co., The Hygenic Corp., and Performance Health LLC, the couple claims created a defective and dangerous product, particularly to the elderly. Reid’s lawsuit seeks $50,000 for his injuries and loss of marital consortium, as well as punitive damages against the exercise band’s manufacturers.

Reid claims he suffered broken bones, blindness to his right eye, and facial disfigurement after the exercise band he used slipped from his hands, launching him face-first into a cabinet. The exercise band's defective design caused Sen. Reid's broken bones and concussion, his lawsuit alleges.

The claim alleges the three companies named in the product liability lawsuit combined to create a dangerous and defective product and failed to warn the elderly about its dangers. Reid claims an appropriate warning on the exercise band’s packaging would have alerted the Senator to take necessary precautions to prevent injury.

Sen. Reid suffered an injury while using a Thera-Band, an elastic exercise band marketed as a resistance training tool. Users secure the exercise band to a sturdy object and insert their hands into the loops located at each end for positive or negative resistance training. Reid’s suit claims the product should have come with a warning alerting the elderly to the dangers of losing one’s grip on the device.
