Volkswagen recently announced it will disperse up to $1,000 in gift cards to each of the 480,000 vehicle owners affected by the VW emissions cheating scandal. Qualifying car owners will receive a $500 prepaid Visa gift card to spend any way they choose as well as an additional $500 gift card to spend at Volkswagen dealerships.
Dubbed the “Customer Goodwill Program”, Volkswagen seeks to rebuild some of the trust lost by VW owners in the wake of discovering the German automaker deceived both customers and regulators into believing VW diesel vehicles were in compliance with the Clean Air Act. Volkswagen could dispense almost half a billion dollars in the U.S. alone as part of the compensation program.
Customers who purchased a Volkswagen vehicle with the affected 2.0 liter engine before November 09, 2015 may qualify for the Customer Goodwill Program. Volkswagen created a website for customers to check their VIN and register to receive the gift cards.
Unfortunately for Volkswagen, its Customer Goodwill Program may only be able to coax forgiveness out of some customers: there are already over 200 Volkswagen diesel lawsuits filed and many more are expected. Federal regulators also have their sights set squarely on Volkswagen in what could amount to the largest financial penalties ever imposed on an auto maker.
