Mirena IUD
When Bayer first announced the Mirena intrauterine device (or IUD), it billed its product as a safer, simpler method of birth control for fast-paced women on the go. However, it has become obvious in recent years that the Mirena IUD presents significant dangers to the women who use it.
Bayer has already been admonished by the federal government for its misleading advertising, and reports are streaming in from across the country saying that the Mirena IUD is dangerous.
Our defective medical products attorneys have decades of experience helping innocent victims across the country. If you’ve been implanted with a Mirena IUD and you’re experiencing significant health problems, please call 1-800-843-3478 today.
We offer free, no-obligation initial consultations to all prospective clients. We’ll discuss your case with care and compassion and explain what you can expect if you decide to move forward with a claim against Bayer.
An Unsafe Product, a Misleading Ad Campaign
The Mirena IUD is a t-shaped device that is placed in the uterus through the vagina. It works by releasing a steady stream of a certain hormone. This thickens cervical mucus, which prevents sperm from entering the uterus. It also inhibits sperm from reaching an egg.
In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration notified Bayer that its marketing campaign for Mirenawas overstating the effectiveness of the device (there is no evidence that the Mirena IUD makes women “look and feel great”, as the campaign suggested).
The FDA also said that the advertising campaign dramatically understated the risks and side effects of the Mirena IUD.
As it turns out, those risks are significant.
The FDA has received more than 45,000 complaints about health problems related to the implantation of a Mirena IUD. The most dangerous and commonly reported of those problems include:
- Intestinal perforations
- Unintentional expulsion of the IUD
- Ovarian cysts
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Organ damage
- Device migration
Bayer, like all pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers of medical devices, had an obligation to produce and market a safe product. And while no medical device is 100 percent safe, companies have an obligation to transparently report all potential side effects and dangers to both consumers and regulators.
At the Cochran Firm, we have a legacy of fighting for society’s innocent victims, and no one is more innocent than a woman who has suffered significant health problems as a result of a birth control device she was assured was safe.
