Invokana linked to ketoacidosis

Diabetes medication Invokana may cause serious side effects

In May 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a Drug Safety Communication warning Invokana (canagliflozin) users about the link between sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors and ketoacidosis.  Injuries like kidney failure, heart attack, and ketoacidosis have been linked to using Invokana. Individuals who suffered injuries may be eligible to file an Invokana lawsuit for compensation.

If you or a loved one were suffered a serious injury while taking Invokana, the law gives you remedy to recover for your damages.  The Cochran Firm, D.C. is actively investigating Invokana injury claims across the country.  The Cochran Firm, D.C.’s team of experienced product liability attorneys can help you recover compensation for injuries suffered as a result of using Invokana to treat type 2 diabetes.

What is Invokana?

Invokana is an SGLT2 inhibitor used to treat type 2 diabetes. Invokana works to lower blood sugar levels by forcing the kidneys to expel sugar through urine.

Invokana was developed by Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma and is marketed by Janssen, a division of Johnson & Johnson.  It was approved by the FDA in March 2013.

What is ketoacidosis?

Ketoacidosis is a serious medical condition. Ketoacidosis occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin and allows excessive amounts of ketones enter the bloodstream.  Ketones are blood acids produced by the liver from fatty acids.

Without insulin, the body cannot utilize glucose for fuel or store fat in fat cells.  Large quantities of fatty acids flow out of the fat cells and are broken down in the liver into ketones.  The release of ketones will cause the blood’s pH to drop and result in ketoacidosis.  A change in the blood’s pH level can have severe health consequences.

Symptoms of ketoacidosis

Ketoacidosis is a serious, possibly deadly medical condition and should be treated immediately.  If untreated, ketoacidosis can result in coma or death.  Symptoms of ketoacidosis include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Confusion
  • Unusual fatigue or sleepiness
  • Dry mouth

The FDA reports 20 documented incidences of Invokana users being sent to the emergency room.  If you or a loved one are taking Invokana and experienced any of the symptoms listed above, you should seek immediate medical attention.
